Herbal Medicine at the Tai Sophia Student Clinic

Do you need wellness support? Are you curious about herbal medicine?

I'm currently pursuing a Masters of Science degree in Herbal Medicine at the Tai Sophia Institute. Until May 2010, I'll be seeing clients in the school's faculty-supervised clinic, giving herbal, dietary, and lifestyle recommendations. The student clinic is a wonderful way to benefit your health at affordable rates. Please contact me to schedule an appointment or to find out more details!

About Herbal Medicine and Wellness Support

Herbal medicine supports the systems of your body as you incorporate dietary and lifestyle changes. Herbs are an ideal way to enhance digestion, immunity, detoxification, stress management, sleep, mood, circulation, and many other physiological processes.

Herbs are not pharmaceutical drugs. Some herbs work quickly, and some take many weeks or months to gently nudge the body towards balance. Herbal remedies are taken daily in order to reap the full benefits of their gentle, nurturing actions.

But which herbal remedies should you take? The array of products available is dizzying! As a clinical herbalist, I navigate the options for you: I match plants to people. In a comprehensive initial consultation, I learn about your unique health goals, lifestyle patterns, and constitution, to determine the combination of herbs that best suits your needs.

A Visit To the Student Clinic

Before your visit, you’ll fill out an intake form, which gives me insight into your health history and goals. The first and largest part of the consultation will be with me and a partner student, one of my classmates. Then, we students will leave the room for a bit to consult with the supervising faculty. We’ll return with a supervisor for a brief interview (so the supervisor knows I'm not making things up!), and then leave you alone again for a few minutes. Finally, I'll return with your personalized herbal, dietary, and lifestyle recommendations.

6 Ways to Take Herbs

Brew Tea: an herbal “tea” is technically an infusion: herbs are soaked in water to bring out their helpful properties. The herbs can be fresh or dried; the water can be hot or cold – it all depends on the herb being used!

Drink Tincture: a tinctured herb has been soaked in alcohol, or a mixture of alcohol and water, to bring out its helpful properties. For those who don’t take alcohol, some herbs can be tinctured in glycerin. A few drops, or a few droppers-full of tincture can be mixed with a small amount of water and taken each day.

Play with Powder: some herbs can be ground into powders, and then swallowed in capsules, or made into tasty nut-butter balls (yum!).

Soothe Skin: many herbs are helpful when applied topically to the skin. Lip balms, lotions, and massage oils are only a few of the many herbal preparations and products with beneficial properties.

Breathe Deep: some herbs have relaxing and rejuvenating scents. Scented herbs or their essential oils can be added to facial steams or to bath salts, or simply wafted.

Cook up a Storm: one of the easiest ways to get herbs into your life is with food! Common culinary herbs and spices are just as beneficial as more exotic plants. Soups and curries are wonderful ways to work with fresh or dried herbs.
